Raising Leaders

picture-13.jpgI just left my session this morning with Steve Ogne entitled “Raising Leaders for Multiplication.” It was a good session as we are thinking through how to identify/recruit/develop/send leaders into San Diego to change the city.

Some things for Kaleo to think about:

In order for us to create a leadership farm system, we need:

1-Loving obedience to Jesus and His Word
2-Pro-active faith and prayer
3-Evangelism integrated with spiritual formation (evangelism and discipleship are never to be seen as two different things).
4-Mentoring in a life and ministry context
5-Step-by-step leadership progression
6-Simple and transferable strategies

Steve mentioned that leaders must be raised up both for the harvest and from the harvest in order to facilitate a church multiplication movement. We have the responsibility to raise up the next generation of pastors, church planters, and missionaries.

Some thoughts he had on whom we are to mentor:

Only mentor,
1-Faithful leaders who faithfully minister
2-Leaders who are faithful to the church and her leaders (if they are not faithful to the current leaders, why should anyone be faithful to them?)
3-Leaders who are already leading others (if they are not leading others, they need to be discipled not mentored).

Additionally, these emerging leaders should have or be:
1-Proven and consistent in their behavior, recognized by others (1. Tim. 3:1)
2-Character which demonstrates the Holy Spirits presence (Gal. 5:22-23)
3-Spiritual wisdom and uncommon sense
4-A natural bond of respect towards their leaders
5-A group to lead (already has leaders). If you are leading and no one is following, then you are merely taking a walk.

We should be looking for and developing an emerging leaders:
1-Call- They need to develop confidence, clarity, and commitment to their personal ministry.
2-Character- We need to encourage gospel growth and change in their personal and relational life.
3-Competence-They need to develop ministry skills including the ability to start, lead, coach, and multiply leaders.
4-Commission- We need to ensure they are personally participating in effective evangelism and intentional discipling relationships.
5-Content- They need to grow in their understanding of Scripture, theology, and philosophy of ministry.

Leaders need to be able to:
1-Cast vision and motivate people to mission.
2-Recruit people and delegate responsibility.
3-Coach and mentor other leaders.
4-Raise and manage a budget for their ministry.
5-Integrate evangelism and discipleship (these can not be viewed apart from one another).

Drew Goodmanson summarized the session well on his latest post.
